KAMAKURA / NANPOKUCHO TACHI BLADE

CIRCA 1360-1390 AD.

ATTRIBUTED TO KANEKIYO OF THE YAMATO TEGAI SCHOOL

SAYA-GAKI BY TANOBE SENSEI OF THE N.B.T.H.K.

IT IS AN INTERESTING FACT TO MENTION THAT THE YAMATO TEGAI SCHOOL RECEIVED ITS NAME DUE TO THE FACT THAT ITS WORKSHOP WAS BUILT IN FRONT OF THE GATE “TEGAI-MON” BELONGING TO THE TODAIJI TEMPLE IN NARA.

* – TYPICAL OF “KAZARI TACHI” BLADE FROM THIS PERIOD.

THE WORK IN OUR OPINION CLOSELY RESEMBLES THAT OF KAMAKURA NAMINOHIRA SCHOOL
FROM SATSUMA PROVINCE. THIS WAS IN OUR OPINION MADE FOR AN KAZARI TACHI.

BIG LONG STREAKS OF KINSUJI… VERY COMMON AMONGST KAMAKURA BLADE

Sayagaki (certification on scabbard)

Translation of the Sayagaki (Written opinion on Shirasaya)

By Tanobe Michihiro sensei – Senior manager at N.B.T.H.K.

Attributed to Yamato no Kuni Tegai Kanekiyo

O-Suriage, Mu-mei

Era is late Nanpokucho – Oei

The characteristics of sword smiths of this time in same group was emphasized strongly on each work.
