EXHIBITION CLASS, MASTERPIECE.

THIS IS THE FINEST MOST EXACTING RECREATION OF A FUKUOKA  ICHIMONJI THAT WE HAVE SEEN. YOSHINDO IS THE MOST WELL KNOWN JAPANESE BLADE MAKER, OF OUR TIME.

HIS COMMON WORKS START AT $30,000.00! A MASTERPIECE WOULD PROBABLY START IN THE $50,000's,
IF HE WOULD UNDERTAKE THE PROJECT.

As there is no owners name on the sword at the present time, your name (or any other) could be easily added to the sword.  Effectively it would be the same as if you had it made for your self.

"ICHIMONJI SCHOOL" KAMAKURA PERIOD.

IT IS A VERY INTERESTING FACT THAT "ICHIMONJI", THE MOST FAMOUS SCHOOL OF SWORD MAKING DURING THE KAMAKURA PERIOD (70 % OF TODAY'S NATIONAL TREASURE SWORDS, ARE FROM THE KAMAKURA PERIOD), ACTUALLY HAD ITS "GRASS ROOTS BEGINNINGS AT SEA", OFF THE COAST OF "CHIKUZEN" PROVINCE! HAD THERE NEVER BEEN A BATTLE OF "DEN-NO-URA" IT IS ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THE "ICHIMONJI SCHOOL" WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN! THE MAJORITY OF "ICHIMONJI" MAKERS WERE FROM BIZEN.

"KYUSHU", HOMELAND OF THE "GENJI - HEIKE" SEA WAR, AND THE "ICHIMONJI" SCHOOL.

THE GREAT SEA BATTLE, AT "DEN-NO-URA", WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST SEA BATTLES IN HISTORY. THE "GENJI" (MINAMOTO CLAN) , WITH A COMPLEMENT OF "850" BATTLE SHIPS, AND THE "HEIKE" (TAIRA CLAN), WITH ONLY "500", (APPROX. "1,350" TOTAL SHIPS! THE SPANISH ARMADA, CONSISTED OF ONLY "130") FACED OFF IN THE INLAND SEA NEAR KYUSHU, AT DEN-NO-URA, ON APRIL, 24, 1185 AD.. THE WEAPONS OF CHOICE WERE "BOW'S, AND ARROW'S. TO SHORTEN A LONG STORY, THE HEIKE HAD THE ADVANTAGE (EVEN THOUGH GREATLY OUT NUMBERED) AND WERE WINNING, DUE TO THERE SUPERIOR SEAMANSHIP. WHEN A TURNCOAT, HEIKE GENERAL BETRAYED THEM BY DISCLOSING TO THE MINAMOTO (GENJI) WHICH SHIP CARRIED THE YOUNG (5 YEAR OLD) "EMPEROR ANTOKU". THE GENJI THEN TOOK COMMAND OF THE IMPERIAL SHIP, AND THE BATTLE WAS SUBSEQUENTLY LOST BY THE "TAIRA".

THE YOUNG (ONLY "5" YEARS OF AGE) DEFEATED EMPEROR "ANTOKU" WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMMIT "SEPPUKU" , BY DROWNING. HIS MATERNAL GRAND MOTHER THE " LADY Ii ", PRAYED WITH THE CHILD, AFTER WHICH THEN LEAPT TO THERE DEATH IN THE SEA!

THE REMAINDER OF THE MAIN LINE "HEIKE SAMURAI" FOUGHT TO THE END, AND PERISHED IN THE SEA! ABOUT THIS TIME A "MYSTIC EVENT" IS THOUGHT TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE. A "CRAB" (INDIGENOUS TO THE AREA) TOOK ON BACK MARKINGS THAT LOOK LIKE THE FACE OF A "SAMURAI WARRIOR". IT IS BELIEVED BY MANY THAT THE SPRIT'S OF THE DEFEATED HEIKE WARRIORS, ROAM THE SEA, IN THE FORM OF THE "THE HEIKE CRAB" (NAMED AFTER THEM). TO THIS DAY THE "HEIKE CRAB" IS NOT EATEN, AND IS TOSSED BACK INTO THE SEA WHEN CAUGHT. THESE EVENTS ARE, COMMEMORATED TO THIS DAY ON, APRIL 24th. OF EVERY YEAR.

YOSHINDO LINEAGE

"YOSHINDO" YOSHIHARA, DESCENDS FROM A DISTINGUISHED LINE ( MON) OF "NIHON TO KAJI" ( JAPANESE SWORD MAKERS ). HE WAS EXPOSED TO THE ART OF SWORD MAKING SINCE CHILDHOOD. HE BEGAN STUDYING SWORD MAKING AT THE AGE OF "12", UNDER THE TUDOR SHIP OF HIS GRAND FATHER, WHO FOUNDED THE "YOSHIHARA  MON" ( SCHOOL )!

YOSHINDO, IS PERHAPS THE MOST FAMOUS SWORD MAKER OF OUR TIME. THIS IS ONE OF HIS MOST IMPRESSIVE MASTER PIECES. IT IS RARE RECREATION OF A "BIZEN ICHIMONJI STYLE BY YOSHINDO. THE MOTOHABA (WIDTH): 1" 3/8 INCH, 3.5 cm.! THE NAGASA, ( LENGTH ) IS 29 3/4" INCHES, 75.4 cm. IT'S GRANDEUR IS ALMOST BEYOND COMPREHENSION, WHEN ONLY VIEWING  IT FROM THE PHOTO'S! THROUGH  PAINSTAKING EXPERIMENTATION, AND METHODICAL PERSISTENCE HE HAS NOT ONLY "REDISCOVERED" MANY OF THE "LOST SECRETS" OF THE KAMAKURA PERIOD OF ART SWORD MAKING, BUT IMPROVED ON SOME OF THEM. ONE OF HIS FIRST MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS WAS THE SUCCESSFUL RECREATION OF "UTSURI" (LIKE VIEWING THE REFLECTION OF THE TEMPERING PATTERN, IN THE WATERS OF A TRANQUIL POND). THE CREATION OF THE ANCIENT STYLE OF "UTSURI" HAS ELUDED ALL BUT A VERY FEW OF THE FINEST SWORD SMITHS FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS!

HE RECEIVED HIS OFFICIAL SWORD MAKING LICENSE IN 1965. AT THE NATIONAL SWORD MAKING CONTEST, HE PROCEEDED TO WIN; FIVE THIRD PRIZES, TWO SECOND PRIZES, AND "7" SEVEN FIRST PRIZES! IN 1982, HE WAS AWARDED THE PRESTIGIOUS TITLE OF " MUKANSA " (ABOVE AND BEYOND ENTERING SWORD MAKING COMPETITIONS)! ONE OF HIS BLADES UNDERWENT A CUTTING TEST, DONE BY "TERUTAKA KAWABATA" A FAMOUS SWORD TESTER. IT SUCCESSFULLY CUT A FINELY MADE "IRON KABUTO" ( HELMET ) OVER 2" - 5.0 cm. DEEP. THIS IS TRULY AMAZING! HE MADE AND PRESENTED KING CARL GUSTAF XVI OF SWEDEN WITH A TANTO. THE KING (A SWORD ENTHUSIAST) VISITED YOSHINDO'S FORGE AND WORKSHOP, AS WELL AS THE N.B.T.H.K.. YOSHINDO CO-AUTHORED THE BOOK "THE CRAFT OF THE JAPANESE SWORD" WITH LEON KAPP. HE WAS MADE AN HONORARY CITIZEN OF "DALLAS TEXAS", WHERE HE HELD A PRIVATE EXHIBITION,  IN 1980. HE EXHIBITED FOR THE BOSTON METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, IN 1981. THE MARINE UNIVERSITY OF CALF. IN 1982. THE SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT GALLERY IN 1983. IN 1989 HE EXHIBITED A TANTO THAT WAS MADE FROM A METEORITE, AT THE TAKASHIMAYA DEPARTMENT STORE. YOSHINDO POSSESSES, SUPERB SKILL, A REMARKABLY ARTISTIC EYE, AND VAST KNOWLEDGE OF METALLURGY AND SCIENCE.

YOSHINDO'S SENSEI (TEACHER) WAS HIS GRAND FATHER "KUNIIE ( KATSUYOSHI ) YOSHIHARA", WHO WAS BORN IN "IWARAKI PREFECTURE, IN 1894, HE MOVED TO TOKYO AS A YOUNG MAN AND BECAME THE  STUDENT OF "SHIGETSUGU KASAMA", AND "AKIHIDE (HIKOSABORO) KUNIHARA", HE WAS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THERE FINEST STUDENTS. HIS WORKS ARE MAINLY DONE IN THE KOTO STYLE. DURING WW II, HE TRAINED SWORD SMITHS FOR THE ARMY, A POSITION OF GREAT HONOR. HE PASSED AWAY IN SHOWA 45, AT AGE 76.

THE FATHER OF YOSHINDO IS, "KUNIIE MASAHIRO" A WELL KNOWN SWORD MAKER. HIS OLDER BROTHER IS THE FAMOUS "KUNIIE SHOJI" WHO CARRIES HIS GRAND FATHERS NAME. HE IS AN EXTREMELY ACCOMPLISHED SWORD SMITH. HE ALSO HOLDS THE COVETED TITLE OF " MUKANSA" (ABOVE ENTERING ANY CONTEST). HE HAS MADE MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ART OF SWORD MAKING. I HAVE SEEN A BLADE BY HIM, DONE IN THE KAMAKURA BIZEN STYLE. THE HADA (BLADE GRAIN STRUCTURE), AND CHOJI  HAMON (TEMPERING), ARE MARVELOUS.

ICHIMONJI, MASTERPIECE RECREATION, BY THE INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS MASTER YOSHINDO.

HAMON ( TEMPERING PATTERN ): "CHOJI-MIDARE MIXED WITH GONOME" DONE IN THE STYLE OF "BIZEN ICHIMONJI"
SCHOOL. THIS STYLE OF HAMON IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DO, THUS IT IS
SELDOM SEEN. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE.

HADA ( GRAIN STRUCTURE ): ITAME (STANDARD WOOD GRAIN AND BURL),
